Happy Tuesday! Hope everyone is taking the time they need to rest and rejuvenate during this challenging time. If you are looking for something to do at home with little effort and maximum benefits look no further! YOGA! Yoga doesn't have to be done in a studio or require you to stand on your head. Yoga requires you to be present, compassionate, and relaxed which everyone can use a little more of during this time! There are many platforms for yoga classes now so jump in and you will immediately see the benefit! #drlisa
**We are here for you! Dr. Laughlin is seeing patient's via telemedicine during normal business hours. Even if you want to do a quick check-in she is available (and all copays/co-insurances are waived!) Don't hesitate to reach out if you need something** 🙂

Happy Monday! I hope everyone was able to get outside and enjoy some of the sunshine 🙂
With immune support being the hot topic right now, it is important to remember our immune system function begins in our digestive tract! Up to 80% of our immune cells reside in the lining of our guts which means guts support = immune support! One easy way to help proper digestion is with my favorite herb, GINGER! Ginger increases our digestive "fire" and can support proper digestion/absorption of nutrients! Below is one way you can help you system:
- 1 inch of ginger: peeled and cut into thin strips
- 1 lime: about 1/2 cup of lime juice
- pinch of salt
Add these ingredients into a jar and be sure the strips of ginger are covered completely. Store in the fridge and about 15 minutes before each meal eat 1-2 slices of the ginger! Feel free to share your experience below! #drlisa

Happy Thursday! Even with the rain I hope everything is getting outside for fresh air regularly 🙂
I wanted to remind everyone that in this difficult time there is no "right" or "wrong" response. Something occurring this suddenly, there was no way to prepare for this on a mental/emotional level. I challenge you all to be patient and kind with yourselves. Allowing yourself to feel however you are feeling. If you are scared, mad, sad, crying, yelling, retreating, organizing, doing nothing, binging TV shows, or eating all types of snack; it is OK!! Allow yourself to just be in what you are feeling and allow any shifts. Be sure you are supporting yourself in whatever ways you can without judgement #drlisa

What are you doing to have fun?? There is a lot to focus on that can be negative and bring down our moods. It is important to laugh EVERY DAY! Find a show, a person, a book, a podcast, something on youtube, anything that brings a smile to your face and spend time each day laughing! After all, laughter is the best medicine 🙂 #drlisa

Often when we talk about fun, or doing things just for fun, we talk about it in a dismissive way as if fun isn't important. We tend to value hard work and seriousness, and we forget to pay our respects to the equally important, light side of silliness and laughter. This is ironic because we all know...Naturopathic Wellness LLC - Dr. Lisa Laughlin ND, MS

Why not Ibuprofen? Great question! There is a lot of misinformation (again) surrounding the use of Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories) with any viruses. It is crucial to note that NSAIDs will NOT necessarily increase your likelihood of contracting any viruses. However, when an NSAID is taken with an active viral infection, the medication can increase prolong the time the virus is in your system and increase the likelihood of further complications. This is why it is being suggested to use analgesic medications such as Tylenol for symptoms associated with an active infection. For other recommendations on pain relievers please be sure to consult your physician. #drlisa

Meditation Monday: take time today to either write or meditate on the following quote and how it may be impacting your thoughts. #drlisa
“We walk invisibly cocooned with all of the things we wish we could control. We think by keeping these things close that we will be able to manage them. If we keep our worries in plain sight we will have less of a chance of them coming true. When in fact the very act of doing so is causing us to live in the places we are trying to avoid….. surrender. We are not in control……. The more we trust the journey itself, the more fluid and joyful life becomes…. What we are trying so hard to avoid or hold in place may in fact be our dreams trying to come into form.... Chaos in life is re-ordering for new things to come into light. Fear is useless, this stops the new from coming into our lives.” - Sarah Blodin, Live Awake podcast “Learning to Surrender” ...

Mediation Monday: What drives your decisions? When a decision needs to be made in your life, do you stop and think about things from a place of balance? Do you go with your first instinct? Do you go by what other people would do? When we are faced with any decision it is always best to check in with ourselves first, this way we know the decision sits well with us. Even if you know a choice would not be the same as others in your life, this doesn't not mean it is a wrong decision. Conscious decision making is really a way we can control the things we do in our lives. #drlisa

Baked Spicy Delicata Squash Salad with FetaMeditation Wednesday: Give yourself the time to sit in silence for 5-10 minutes today. During this time observe your thoughts and allow them to flow freely, trying not to linger on one specific thought. Practicing meditation in this way will allow you to adapt to stress in a more positive and healthy way. Allowing our thoughts to flow will enable us to choose which thoughts we hold onto. In doing this, we can shift our obsessive/ruminating thoughts and free ourselves from believing everything we think. #drlisa ...

You may notice you feel lighter and more energized after a few minutes of working in the gratitude. 🙏 #drlisa ...

Ever wonder what guides Naturopathic physicians? Check out our Naturopathic Medicine principles below! #drlisa
1. The Healing Power of Nature (Vis Medicatrix Naturae): Naturopathic medicine recognizes an inherent self-healing process in people that is ordered and intelligent. Naturopathic physicians act to identify and remove obstacles to healing and recovery, and to facilitate and augment this inherent self-healing process.
2. Identify and Treat the Causes (Tolle Causam): The naturopathic physician seeks to identify and remove the underlying causes of illness rather than to merely eliminate or suppress symptoms.
3. First Do No Harm (Primum Non Nocere): Naturopathic physicians follow three guidelines to avoid harming the patient: Utilize methods and medicinal substances which minimize the risk of harmful side effects, using the least force necessary to diagnose and treat; Avoid when possible the harmful suppression of symptoms; and Acknowledge, respect, and work with individuals’ self-healing process.
4. Doctor as Teacher (Docere): Naturopathic physicians educate their patients and encourage self-responsibility for health. They also recognize and employ the therapeutic potential of the doctor-patient relationship.
5. Treat the Whole Person: Naturopathic physicians treat each patient by taking into account individual physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, social, and other factors. Since total health also includes spiritual health, naturopathic physicians encourage individuals to pursue their personal spiritual development.
6. Prevention: Naturopathic physicians emphasize the prevention of disease by assessing risk factors, heredity and susceptibility to disease, and by making appropriate interventions in partnership with their patients to prevent illness. ...

Did you know?! Naturopathy Origin Facts!
The term "Naturopathy" was first coined in 1885 by Dr. John Scheel, a German homeopath practicing the methods of Kneipp and Kuhn at his Badekur Sanitarium in New York. Benedict Lust purchased the name in 1901 to describe the eclectic practice of "nature doctors".
The Kneipp convention held in New York in 1901 marks the birth of naturopathy in America. At that time, Naturopathy embraced all known means of natural therapeutics, including diet, herbs, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, exercise, manipulative therapies, electrotherapy, psychological and
spiritual counselling. Louisa Lust, a naturopath and the wife of Benedict Lust, provided much financial backing for the naturopathic profession in its early years. Dr. Henry Lindlahr and other significant naturopaths influenced the profession in the early years. ...
Nutrition Tip: try eating 3 meals per day! With all of the fad diet, quick tricks, and contradicting information in regards to the best way to eat, it can be confusing. To feed your body properly and give your digestion proper rest through out the day it is best to eat 3 meals. Timing of the meals is less important (more information on this in coming posts!) but eating 3 real meals per day is a great way to jumpstart your health, digestion, and metabolism! #drlisa ...
Meditation Monday: close your eyes take 5 minutes at some point today and tune into your body. Where are you feeling tension? Where are you feeling stress? Are you holding your breath? Are you relaxed? Just be observant of these things during this time without judgement and each time you exhale focus on releasing the areas where you feel the most tension/stress.
Once the 5 minutes is over (you can set a timer) you will most likely feel a little lighter and more grounded. Try to create this habit on a daily basis in order to return to balance at least once during your day! #drlisa ...

Did you know??
Naturopathy involves a range of natural modalities including nutritional medicine, diet and lifestyle
advice, herbal medicine, and homeopathy.
Dr. Laughlin uses Homeopathy and CranioSacral Therapy in
her arsenal of tools and modalities to help patients.
Homeopathy was brought to the US by Hans Burch Gram in 1825. Within a decade the New York
Homeopathic Society was formed. From there the North American Academy of the Homeopathic
Healing Art – referred to the Allentown Academy was chartered in 1836. It was the first homeopathic
college in the country but also in the world. Acceptance of Homeopathy has been difficult for some,
for despite the simplicity of the law; like cures like; there is nothing easy about its practice. It takes
understanding to realize that there is great power in the infinitesimal.
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) was pioneered and developed by osteopathic physician, John E. Upledger,
following extensive scientific studies from 1975 to 1983 at Michigan State University, where he served
as a clinical researcher and Professor of Biomechanics. CST is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating
and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system -
comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal
cord. Using a soft touch generally no greater than 5 grams, or about the weight of a nickel,
practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central
nervous system. By complementing the body's natural healing processes, CST is increasingly used as a
preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and is effective for a wide
range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction, including migraine headaches;
chronic neck and back pain; stress and tension-related problems; Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome
(TMJ); Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder; SomatoEmotional Release (SER) - release #drlisa ...

Did you know?
Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of primary health care derived from a strong philosophical belief about life, health, and disease. Its principles and philosophies are an integral component of naturopathic assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. Naturopathic medicine promotes wellness and prevention. It blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine and it emphasizes disease as a process rather than as an entity. Naturopathic medicine is defined by principles rather than by methods or modalities. Above all, it honors the body’s innate
wisdom to heal. The emphasis of naturopathic therapies is to treat the causes of disease and to stimulate the healing power of body by using natural techniques and therapies without harming. Naturopathic doctors diagnose and treat both acute and chronic conditions and treat patients of all ages. #drlisa ...

Massaged Kale & Fresh Berry Salad with Citrusy Vinaigrette
Ingredients:
• 1 large bunch curly kale, de-stemmed
and torn or chopped into pieces, about 6 cups
• 1/4 tsp sea salt
• 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
• 1 Tbsp olive oil
Salad Ingredients:
• 6 cups of prepared, 'massaged' kale leaves
• 1-pint strawberries, quartered
• 3/4 cup fresh organic blueberries
• 1 small red onion, sliced
• 1/2 cup raw walnuts
Homemade Citrusy Vinaigrette:
• 1/4 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice
• 1/4 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
• 2 Tbsp raw honey
• 2 Tbsp fresh chopped cilantro leaves
• 1/4 tsp each, sea salt and white pepper
• 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
Instructions to Prep Kale:
1. Add the kale to a large glass bowl along with the salt and lemon juice.
2. ‘Massage’ (think of the motion used to rub someone’s shoulders…get your hands in there!) kale for 4 minutes, or until leaves are sweet and tender.
3. Add the olive oil and give one more quick ‘massage.”
Final Instructions:
1. In a small bowl, whisk the dressing ingredients until well combined. Set aside.
2. To a large bowl add 'massaged' kale and pour over the dressing. Toss well to combine and soften the leaves.
3. Add in the strawberries, blueberries, onions, and walnuts. Enjoy!
**Optional: Add some grated carrots and sliced yellow peppers for the colors of the rainbow! Also add some crumbled salty feta to balance out the sweetness of the berries if you want!

Happy Earth Day!! Today is the day to show our appreciation for the wonderful Mother Earth! It is also important to reflect on what you can be doing on a daily basis to help the environment. A little bit of awareness goes a long way! Here are a few tips to help on a daily basis 🙂 #drlisa
1. Bring reusable shopping bags to the store! (not just for groceries!) They also make smaller net bags for produce as well which can cut down on a lot of plastic use and reduce garbage.
2. Bring a reusable cup to your favorite coffee/tea shop! Most cafes will give you a personal cup discount and you won't have to throw anything away when you're done!
3. Walk it out! (or bike it out) When going somewhere close to home, try walking or biking. This will greatly reduce car emissions and help with stress levels/cardiovascular health!
4. Buy local when you can. Shopping local and buying locally made products reduces the cost/pollution when buying things made across the country or in another part of the world.
5. Plant some flowers! (even if they are in a pot on your windowsill) Flowers can help with the local ecosystem as well as help keep the air clean. They are pretty to look at too 🙂
Enjoy the day and make some changes to further help our environment! ...

Spring is around the corner! Help support your liver with a green detox smoothie. #drlisa
Green Detox Smoothie
This vibrant smoothie will see you off to a great start. Apple, kiwi and kale on their own are worth their weight in Vitamin C gold but together they are dynamo. Make sure to choose a Granny Smith though. Some varieties have extremely high levels of sugar and few antioxidants but not so with the Granny — it contains more phytonutrients than any other, with 50% of them in the skin. However, 90% of pesticides also reside there so, whilst important not to peel, it is imperative to buy organic.
Kale also provides impressive levels of both Omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin A, and there’s no need to lament the passing of milk from your diet — kale contains far more calcium.
Parsley, twice as much iron as spinach by the way, is practically off the scale in Vitamin K which strengthens bones and limits neuronal damage in the brain. On which subject, cucumber plays an important role in guarding against brain disease, including Alzheimer’s, so you get a double whammy in this glass. ‘Cool as a cucumber’ has good meaning — it cools inflammation in the body, as well as serving as nature’s breath freshener. Ginger we all know to be a pain reliever, settler of nausea and abdominal discomfort.
And lastly, coconut water. Heavy in natural vitamins, minerals and trace elements, not to mention a rich source of potassium, magnesium and electrolytes, all super good for alkalizing the body.
Ingredients
• 1 Granny Smith apple, cored and roughly chopped, peel left on
• 1 kiwi, peeled and roughly sliced
• 1 large green kale leaf, stalk removed, leaf roughly chopped
• ¼ packed cup curly parsley, stalks included
• 2½-inch piece cucumber, thickly sliced, peel left on
• ¾-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and sliced
• 2 cups coconut water
Instructions
1. Put all the ingredients into a high-speed blender and blend until completely smooth.

Mental Wellness Tip: Every day I see patients in my office who are saying "yes" to way too many things and have nothing left for self-care. It is very important to know our limits so we do not overexert ourselves and keep our bodies in a state of exhaustion. Try saying "no" more often! Even if someone else really wants us to do something, we should not say "yes" at the demise of our own mental/physical well-being. #drlisa

Sleep Well Tip: Patients often come in with sleep issues and have tried melatonin which "doesn't work." Melatonin has gotten a lot of recognition in recent years as a sleep aid which is fantastic! However, it is NOT the only natural thing out there for sleep issues! If you have issues STAYING asleep, melatonin may not be the best treatment.
Try eating a complex carbohydrate with dinner i.e. sweet potatoes, whole grain brown rice, or quinoa. These foods help with blood sugar control and cortisol levels which usually cause early morning waking. It may take a few days but most patients notice a difference in sleep within a week or so with changing this in their diet. #drlisa
