Greetings!

Spring has Sprung! Hopefully everyone has been able to get outside and enjoy the beautiful
weather! Below you will find the changes to our weekly hours/policies and simple ways to
help prepare the body for warmer weather.

Weekly Hours:
Monday: 10am-5pm
Tues/Wednesday: 10am-6pm
Thursday: 11am-7pm
Office closed on Fridays

Please allow 24-hrs for a response to any emails and or phone calls during normal business
hours.

Supplement orders: will go out same day if placed by 10am, if not then it will ship out the
following day

Office Closed: Thursday May 5th through Tuesday May 10th. Please place any supplement
orders prior to Wednesday May 4th to ensure the order is processed before the office
closes.

Simple Ways to Cleanse Your Body

Lifestyle cleansing is important to prepare the body for warmer temperatures and gently clear
out toxins. Before beginning any cleanse or detox protocols, be sure normal elimination is
occurring daily (i.e. 1-3 bowel movements per day, normal urination, sweating, and lung
function).

  1. Clean Eating: plant based and organic when you can! Clean 15 Dirty Dozen List
  2. Hydration: 1/2 body weight in ounces, (work up slowly if not consistently drinking water)
  3. Dry skin brushing: increase circulation and lymphatic flow How To
  4. Sweating: it is important to sweat! The skin is one of our largest elimination organs and sweating can help release water soluble toxins. 30 minutes of sweating 3-4 times per week by exercising or sauna (if beginning the sauna for the first time please, seek medical clearance to be sure the cardiovascular system is healthy)
  5. Epsom salt bath: begin with 10-15min soak 1-2 times per week
  6. Sleep hygiene: 7-8 hours per night, no electronic devices 1 hour before bed time, and establish a night time routine to prepare your body for sleep.
  7. Stress management: establish activities or habits to help minimize stress on a daily basis

Chronic Stress and Weight Loss

Weight loss is always a hot topic, especially at the beginning of the year. While exercise and healthy eating are at the foundation of a healthy weight, a commonly overlooked component is stress. Acute stress is healthy and normal in our day to day life however, chronic stress can have damaging effects on our health. Chronic stress can stimulate the release of a certain protein called betatrophin, which blocks the body from being able to break down fat. This is the main reason why people who are chronically stressed tend to gain weight and can have a more difficult time removing this weight.

Betatrophin is released from the liver in response to stress and is related to the insulin resistance (Diabetes type 2 or metabolic syndrome) seen with chronic stress. When the body is put under stress (physical, mental, emotional) it will release certain hormones to help the body continue to function. The body will go into survival mode and shift metabolic processes to accomodate the increase in stress. This is typically why people under chronic stress have a difficult time sleeping and tend to crave simple sugars such as candy and carbohydrates.

If you feel yourself becoming overwhelmed easily and gaining weight, it is important to have your stress hormones checked to determine the best course of treatment. There are many Naturopathic treatments to help manage stress, weight gain, and metabolism. The best thing to do when feeling stressed is to get enough rest, eat whole foods, and exercise regularly. These are simple yet effective ways to keep the state of chronic stress away!

Happy Holidays! Naturopathic Wellness will have a change in business hours during the last two weeks of December.

Holiday Hours:

Open 12/28-29 9am-5pm

In January 2016 Wednesday hours will switch to 10-6pm (previously 11-7pm)

Now that the Holiday season is in full swing, most people feel their stress levels begin to creep up. Below find a few easy ways to keep yourself healthy and fresh through the Holiday season.

5 Simple Ways to Have a Healthy and Happy Holiday!

Probiotics

Healthy gut flora is at the forefront of our immune and digestive system. Low beneficial bacteria (which can occur due to stress and poor diet) can lead our gut to be more inflamed and tax our immune system making us more likely to become sick. Having a good probiotic, one with at least 5 different strains and 1 billion bacteria, can help the body stay healthy through the indulgent Holiday season.

Mediataion/Relaxation and Gratitude

Taking 5-10 minutes each day to meditate, relax, or express gratitude for something in your life can greatly impact stress. Gratitude and meditation have been shown to calm the nervous system and create a better sense of happiness. Scheduling these things into your daily routine will benefit the whole body.

Sleep

This one may seem obvious but the more stress we have on our plates, the less restful and restorative our sleep tends to be. Unwinding 1 hour before bed with a book (not an electronic device), calming tea (chamomile, lavendar, lemon balm), or a bath can help prepare your body for a more restful sleep. If you have issues falling asleep, be sure to not have caffeine after 2pm and stop all electronics within an hour of falling asleep.

Lemon Water

Warm or room temperature lemon water can help to hydrate and alkalinize the body. During this time of year people typically eat more acidic foods (i.e. baked goods, meats, breads, alcohol) which can decrease energy and make digestion sluggish. Drinking 6-8oz of lemon water first thing in the morning will jumpstart your system and aid with proper digestion through out the day.

Vitamin D

During the fall and winter months we have fewer hours during the day where we are exposed to sunlight. Most of us do not spend a lot of time outside during this time of the year. This sets our immune systems up to be weakened due to a drop in vitamin D formation. Supplementing with vitamin D during the colder months can help the immune system work more efficiently and decrease the number of colds/flus.
**Be sure to check your vitamin D levels before supplementing high doses of the vitamin.

Labor Day Hours

I hope everyone is enjoying the last few weeks of Summer!

The office will be closed on Labor Day, Monday September 7th and then again September 9th-13th. I will have regular office hours on Tuesday Sept 8th. Any supplement orders or questions should be submitted prior to noon on Tuesday the 8th.
Normal office hours will resume on Monday September 14th.

If there is an emergency during the time the office is closed, please go to your nearest medical facility. There will be a Naturopath you can contact for emergencies ONLY, for more information call the office number (475) 227-2773.
